Navigating the Caregiver River Presentation
In the Navigating the Caregiver River presentation, we explore the common challenges caregivers face during each phase of caring for a family member, and we discuss the 12 strategies that lead to a sustainable caregiving experience. The Special Edition 12 Sustainable Caregiving Strategies PDF eBook is included for each participant.
When we experience a significant life change, our support network often changes, so it isn’t surprising that we need to rethink and recreate our support system when we step, or fall head-first, into a caregiving role. When we think of a support system, we often think of people. While people can be an essential part of our caregiver support system, we need a more varied and versatile system that doesn’t solely rely on the physical and emotional availability of others. As a speaker, I demonstrate through examples how the 12 Sustainable Caregiving Strategies can help caregivers construct a new support system.
Imagine your caregiving journey is like being in a raft on a river. The river has calm sections, obstacles, rapids, and a few waterfalls. We often don’t know what is around the next bend. At times, we feel like we’ve been tossed out of the raft and are drowning. When we employ certain strategies to protect our well-being, manage the emotions and the stress, the river doesn’t change, but how we navigate the river changes. We step into the flow.
Become empowered with Sustainable Caregiving Strategies and explore how to:
- Prioritize caregiver well-being
- Prevent burnout with boundaries
- Disarm the triggers with mindfulness
- Reclaim control by letting go
- Cultivate self-compassion
- Forgive to free your heart and mind
- Reimagine and micro-dose self-care
- Vent to release the pressure

Attendee Feedback
This has been SO helpful for me…I have been struggling so terribly every day (MIL moved in early October) and we moved in order to accommodate her and I quit my job and got a new job working from home in order to be here for her 24 hours a day….thanks to you, I finally figured out what exactly I have been feeling which I had not realized…Resentment. And grieving what was before….and then guilt for feeling that… 🙁

Theresa’s points and examples were “spot on”. I really laughed out loud about the resealable blueberry bag ruckus example. It is uncanny that just today I saw a chaotic e-mail exchange among us sisters about snack bags and who would need to make a special trip to Walmart for them !!!!
My sister has been doing the inventorying of certain items like this but her boundary setting approach is now “drop and run” and don’t communicate this new boundary to anyone! Needless to say, we are in need of a “Theresa chat” about setting boundaries and asking for help in a more respectful way! Gratefully,
Ruth
This speaker is amazing!!!!… I wish I had all this wonderful info/ resources when my sister and I were caretaking our mom and trying to navigate our path 6 years ago!
